We developed an outreach program for area high school, middle school and home schooled students that meets Saturday morning once a month. The students are given an hour-long presentation on a topic not commonly seen in the traditional school curriculum. Following this is a second hour with a hands-on/laboratory portion where the ideas presented in the first hour are employed. Different departments take turns in leading the session. The most common departments have been chemistry, mathematics, biology, and physics, but areas as diverse as communications, philosophy, and statistics have also been involved. The program uses approximately $6K a year, and was first funded by an external grant but is currently funded internally. The program aims specifically to target under represented groups in science and help foster an interest in STEM fields.
