P152: Experiences with the development and design of an online general chemistry course

William Farina, Jr. (Pennsylvania State University, USA), Carrie Ryan (Pennsylvania State University, USA), Mary Bojan (Pennsylvania State University, USA), Lori Van Der Sluys (Pennsylvania State University, USA), Pshemak Maslak (Pennsylvania State University, USA)

An online introductory general chemistry offering (non-laboratory) at Penn State will complete its second semester in the summer of 2012.  All course components, including instructional design, content delivery, and technological interfaces are being built from the ground up to create a unique course offering.  We will share our experiences with the design process including: methods of student interaction, inclusion and motivation, technological design and compatibility, accuracy of assessment, and methods of content delivery.  We will focus particularly on how our experiences with the “first run” of the course have informed our decision making process and improved design features of the current semester offering.
