P155: Design, development, and hybridization of an online second-semester general chemistry course incorporating SCALE-UP

Gabriela Weaver (Purdue University, USA)

We have developed and implemented a version of the second-semester General Chemistry course that incorporates elements of SCALE-UP classrooms and online delivery of lecture content.  This hybrid version of the course uses online lectures supported by quizzes to be completed by students on their own time, three times per week.  Class meetings take place once per week and utilize the collaborative group learning format based on SCALE-UP, originally developed at NC State.  The course was taught in a traditional format for the first semester, and the hybrid format for the second semester.  The majority of students were the same in both semesters.  The paired conceptual-algorithmic ACS exams were used at the end of each semester.  Data were also collected via surveys collected at the mid-point and end of each semester.  Quantitative and qualitative results will be discussed that compare student outcomes for the two formats of the course.
