P179: An instrument-based approach to the introductory analytical laboratory

Mark Jensen (Concordia College, USA)

With the goal of both modernizing the introductory analytical chemistry laboratory and increasing student engagement in the analytical process, a six-week instrument rotation has been developed. This rotation occurs in the first half of the semester and focuses on molecular and atomic spectroscopy, and liquid and gas chromatography. Critical to the implementation of this rotation are an online laboratory manual and the elimination of formal laboratory class times. The second half of the semester is then dedicated to student-designed analytical projects that emphasize each step in the analytical process, culminating with publication of results in our own online journal.
