P212: Intensive undergraduate research and mentoring experiences to diversify graduate degree holders

Brenda Blacklock, Stephen Randall (Indiana University Purdue University – Indianapolis, USA)

The IUPUI Undergraduate Research and Mentoring (IUPUI URM) program targets underrepresented minorities with the goal of diversifying graduate degree holders in the biological sciences.  We bring undergraduate researchers into a multidisciplinary community of scientists in a sustained research and mentoring experience supported by activities that enhance their success as scientists and immerse students in the culture of science.  Two cohorts of URM fellows have entered the program and, while the IUPUI student body is diverse, we find that the majority of our applicants are African immigrants.  The challenges and successes in encouraging high potential, historically underrepresented students at an urban life and health sciences campus to consider and matriculate into basic sciences graduate programs will be discussed.
