P221: Collaborating across campuses: Encouraging community college and university students to work together on chemical outreach initiatives

Daniel Brennan, Alexsa Silva (Binghamton University, USA)

The Greater Binghamton area is home to two public postsecondary institutions governed by the State University of New York (SUNY): Binghamton University (BU) and Broome Community College (BCC).  While these SUNY “sisters” have long shared students, with a significant number of BU students fulfilling at least some program requirements at Broome and a high percentage of BCC graduates transferring to Binghamton to complete their 4-year degree, there was little opportunity for the two student bodies to perform collaborative chemical outreach.  In the past few years, however, the Science Club at BCC and the Undergraduate Chemical Society at BU have worked together to offer joint outreach opportunities during such important events as National Chemistry Week, Chemists Celebrate Earth Day, and Making Stuff in Greater Binghamton, a special partnership to promote materials science.  This presentation will discuss the process involved in bringing the two groups together and the outcomes of this effort.
