P222: Graduate student community outreach: bringing science to our local schools

Megan Fegley, Robert Congdon (Binghamton University, USA)

For many years the Binghamton University Graduate Chemistry Club has strived to reach out to the surrounding community. During those years we have displayed demos during and after school hours in elementary, middle and high schools. In this presentation, we will detail the success we have had in bringing science to local children of all ages. The challenges involved in achieving graduate student participation and conveying our detailed knowledge of science to an audience of young minds will also be discussed. The purpose of our presentation is to share the lessons learned in cultivating involvement from students in kindergarten to twelfth grade and how to foster their scientific interest at an early age.
