P272: Synthesizing a conducting polymer from waste chemicals

In this study we recycled the waste chemical, aniline, from organic laboratory as a starting material. Students practiced the synthesis of a conducting polymer, polyaniline, by chemical and electrochemical polymerization in general chemistry laboratory. The chemicals used in the experiment have been cut down to less amount and the experiment can be finished in a three-hour lab. They learned the concepts of recycling and conducting polymers, synthesized the modern materials, and examined the properties of the polymer. Multimedia teaching resources, such as photo-demonstrated lab manual, teaching PowerPoint, and demonstration movie were available for teaching assistants and students. The questionnaires were conducted to assess the learning outcomes.
