P341: Modeling the research experience in the general chemistry laboratory through an ongoing class wiki

Graeme Wyllie (Concordia College, USA)

As part of the General Chemistry Laboratory program at Concordia College, student teams are required to carry out a multi-week research project on the degradation of sulfa drugs. For the past five years, student teams have generated and test hypotheses relating to this problem. The goal of this project is to provide the students with an experience encompassing all facets of research from background research, experiment design, collaboration and presentation of results. Development of a class wiki has proved invaluable in a number of these areas. This wiki has been in operation for three years allowing student teams to research what work has been done to date, blog their weekly progress, share results with teams working on related hypotheses and ultimately submit their work to an archive which is then available to students in the years following. The introduction and benefits of this simple resource in the laboratory are shared.
