Prior to 2010, traditional “pencil and paper” examinations were employed to evaluate student learning in the context of the undergraduate organic laboratory courses. Recognizing the need for skill assessment has led to the creation and implementation of mid-term and final examinations that incorporate both conceptual organic chemistry knowledge and practical organic laboratory skills. The major challenges to implementation included design, safety, set-up and timing issues. These challenges will be considered and evaluated in terms of success or failure. Specific examples of practical activities and student comments are included.
