P43: Designing undergraduate laboratory space for cooperative learning

Joseph Dinnocenzo (University of Rochester, USA), Charles Gantt (University of Rochester, USA)

This presentation will describe collaborative efforts at the University of Rochester to integrate pedagogical strategies for cooperative learning into the design of modern and innovative undergraduate teaching laboratory space completed in the summer of 2011 and currently in use. The presentation team (course instructor and director of planning) will discuss the processes utilized, challenges met in the planning and construction, lessons learned, and outcomes realized.  A description of the new lab will include design elements to facilitate and promote cooperative learning, state-of-the-art multimedia capabilities for displaying and sharing information, and energy-saving/green initiatives, including ductless fume hoods, an in-house vacuum system to replace water aspirators, and high efficiency lighting.
