P436: Using a laboratory practical to assess student learning in general chemistry

The laboratory practical is an excellent way to learn how much students have learned in a laboratory course.  This talk will highlight some of the logistical challenges and some possible solutions to these challenges.  It will also review some of the choices that need to be made to develop a laboratory practical.  And finally, the talk will demonstrate the kind of information that can be obtained about student learning and how it can provide feedback for improving the laboratory curriculum.  Giving a laboratory practical can be an enlightening experience, and even if you only use this once you will learn a lot about what your students really learned.
