P469: Don’t call it chemistry; call it medicine

Douglas Urban (North Central State College, USA)

After the 2010 BCCE we took the approach that we are teaching a course in medicine, not GOB chemistry.   On the first day we include real life medical issues that we believe engage the student to study chemistry.  At North Central State College a close working relationship has been established between the Chemistry and the Allied Health/Nursing Departments.  This collaboration has resulted in a GOB course that we believe engages students by showing them how chemistry is medicine. If you are trying to decide on what topics to include in your GOB course and want some ideas on how to show your students the relevance of chemistry to their careers we will share our ideas.
