P481: Advantages and challenges of incorporating a blog into a chemistry class

As social media, alternative news sources, and new technologies continue to further permeate the lives of all people, examining and using these tools in a controlled, undergraduate setting gives students exposure to the activity without many of the pitfalls.  Blogs, or web logs, are personal journals published on the World Wide Web.  Given the ease of use and potential for growth, a blog for math and science majors was created at Cumberland University (http://scienceandmathatcu.wordpress.com/) to address this opportunity.  A major advantage of blogging assignments is that the blog creates an audience for the student when writing, alleviating the common problem of writing just what the professor wants.  A discussion of blogging assignments, challenges and using the blog for departmental activities will be included.
