P5: Using active learning strategies in the analytical chemistry course series to prepare undergraduate students for laboratory research experiences

The ability to perform laboratory research is commonly considered to be one of the hallmarks of successful undergraduate chemical education.  Like students at many institutions, Lycoming College students are required to complete a research experience as a requirement for graduation.  The focus of our efforts to prepare students for research has been to develop open-ended, investigational laboratory experiments that integrate closely with material presented in the classroom.  This talk will describe the development of active learning assignments in our analytical chemistry course series and their implementation in the classroom and laboratory.  Techniques for monitoring student learning will also be discussed.
