P509: Theme-based modules in the organic chemistry lab

Katherine Masters (Pennsylvania State University, USA)

The concepts and applications of organic chemistry can be seen in many areas of science.  Typically, traditional organic chemistry laboratory curricula and laboratory textbooks introduce the common lab techniques in a way that does not connect organic chemistry to other fields of science.  For this reason, a theme-based modular curriculum was developed to teach the basic lab techniques in the context of specific disciplines such as agricultural science, medicine, food science, and forensics science.
