P548: What does a 5 on the AP really mean?

Jennifer Claesgens (Northern Arizona University, USA)

This research compares the performance of students at a US public school (n=64) on the norm-referenced Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry exam to their performance on an criterion-referenced assessment system (referred to as ChemQuery) that measures student conceptual understanding. Our findings indicate that the two types of assessments (norm-referenced for problem solving skills and criterion-referenced on a scale of conceptual understanding) are highly correlated, but that the student scores on the ChemQuery test are disappointingly low. This study compares student performance on each and discusses the implications for chemistry teachers incorporating chemistry education research into their design of classroom assessment strategies.
