I have employed the Science Writing Heuristic in first semester general chemistry laboratory since 2008. The main advantage of the SWH is that it makes the participants think about and develop their own laboratory procedures. I have recently employed the SWH in organic and biochemistry laboratory sections composed mostly of nursing students. The SWH has been implemented in four projects in order to encourage the students to think and write as scientists. Data are pooled from the various projects at the end of the laboratory period and conclusions are drawn by the students. The projects and their results will be discussed.
