P562: Essential skills for chemistry: A mid–semester intervention course

Betsy Ratcliff, Mark Schraf (West Virginia University, USA)

We have developed a mid-semester course for students who have elected to drop first semester general chemistry. The course focused on learning theory, study strategies and time management skills as well as achieving mastery in those problem solving skills most essential to success in chemistry. The premise was to provide students with an alternative course to allow them to maintain full-time status that could also increase their chances of success when they re-attempt general chemistry in a subsequent semester. The talk will outline student selection/ invitation, the organization and presentation of the course and longitudinal data of the subsequent performance of course participants.
