P578: Engaging students via the Thayer Method of instruction in a GOB class at Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC)

Leonard Anagho (Georgia Gwinnett College, USA)

At GGC, many chemistry courses including the GOB courses are taught using the Thayer Method of instruction inherited from the United States Military Academy at West Point. By the Thayer Method, students are made aware that they are responsible for their own learning. Instructors implement this teaching pedagogy by providing a detailed syllabus and an assignment sheet to students by the first day of class. Before students come to every class they are encouraged and are expected to have prepared the daily lesson. In class the instructor strives to enhance learning by a combination of group learning and active learning exercises. In this oral presentation, a detailed discussion of how the Thayer Method of instruction is utilized in my GOB class at GGC will be covered.
