P663: Adding biochemistry to organic courses

Steven Fleming (Temple University, USA)

We have developed the teaching tool “Organic Reaction Animations” (ORA) for in-class use in organic chemistry. It can also be used by students outside of the classroom. We have created a version that is compatible with modern mobile electronic devices. We are nearing completion of the related teaching tool “Bio-Organic Reaction Animations” (BioORA). This program is useful for instructors of organic chemistry if they choose to cover the supra-molecular organic events that occur in bio-organic chemistry. This might be helpful since the new MCAT material has more biochemistry. It is also useful software for biochemistry students since it includes enzymes, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. We have 23 animations to help students understand and explore the 3D nature of biomolecules. BioORA is available online at no cost to the user and is compatible with Mac and PC. A review of the content of this program and the results of assessment of BioORA will be presented.
