Students often have difficulty visualizing what occurs at a particulate level in a dynamic equilibrium system. Most laboratory activities rely on macroscopic observations and do not help students build accurate particulate level models of phenomena. This two-part teacher-designed/tested guided inquiry experiment addressing equilibrium on a particulate and macroscopic level will be presented and made available. The activity includes a comprehensive teacher guide with complete preparation notes, a description of teacher facilitation, potential student responses, and guidelines for student assessment. A description of the experiment, teacher reflections, and student learning outcomes will be discussed.
