P695: Discover the trends of the periodic table

Created as a part of the Target Inquiry Program at Grand Valley State University, this activity helps students develop their own understanding of periodic trends.  The initial card sort activity requires them to identify and use periodic trends to order element cards and then asks them to predict properties of an undiscovered element using those trends. Students apply the trends as they compare and explain the relative reactivities of calcium and magnesium in a short laboratory-based activity.  Scaffolding questions are an important part of facilitating instruction leading to the desired outcomes. The activity will be presented along with facilitation tips.
