P707: Effects of interest in science, study habits, sex and level of study on the nature of science literacy level of undergraduate chemistry students of the University of the West Indies, Barbados

The University of the West Indies, UWI, has introduced a course to increase scientific literacy among its students. However, to date no studies have been undertaken to assess this. To this end, the researchers find it necessary to assess the level of scientific literacy, more specifically nature of science (NOS) literacy among undergraduate chemistry students.  The main research questions are: what is the level of NOS literacy among undergraduate chemistry students in the UWI, Barbados and is there any significant difference in the level of NOS literacy based on level of study, sex, interest in science and study habits?  A descriptive survey research design is employed utilizing two instruments the Predictors of Students’ Knowledge of NOS Questionnaire and a NOS Literacy Test (NOSLiT) developed by Wenning. The data collected was analyzed using the mean scores and standard deviations the NOSLiT as well as ANOVA, t-test and linear regression.
