P712: Civic engagement in the classroom: Starting small to make the connections

The primary goal of a liberal arts curriculum is to develop the relationships among fundamental disciplines and enhance understanding of the social, political, and ethical implications of scientific achievements through multifaceted pedagogical approaches.  To this end, we, as educators, work to actively explore a variety of tools to use in the classroom to portray these relationships to our students.  One such tool is civic engagement.  Civic engagement does not have to be large, it can begin as a small project to raise student awareness of social issues and/or work within the local community.  We will discuss the benefits to starting small and the use of small projects as a way to get started using civic engagement.
