P736: Invitation to Chemistry : Developed for a diverse prep course

Deborah Mead (Seminole State College of Florida, USA)

Invitation to Chemistry is a textbook that was written in the mid 1990’s for the Foundations of College Chemistry course taught at Seminole State College of Florida and has been here since that time.  At Seminole the Foundations course is a laboratory course that serves at least three distinct populations – allied health chemistry, preparation for general chemistry, and science for education majors.  Over the past year the text has undergone a major rewrite, keeping to the original developmental philosophy and unique topic arrangement, but with an eye toward enhancing student success and adding more allied health related examples.  We will discuss the philosophy behind the non-traditional arrangement of topics as well as present student perceptions of the book as a learning tool and statistics regarding the relative success of these students in the general chemistry sequence.
