P765: Helping the Target Inquiry program encourage teacher scholarship and improve dissemination

Debbie Herrington (Grand Valley State University, USA), Ellen Yezierski (Miami University, USA)

Target Inquiry (TI) is an innovative professional development program for high school chemistry teachers focused on improving inquiry-based instruction in high school chemistry classes. One barrier to inquiry instruction is the lack of quality instructional materials. As part of the TI program, teachers develop, pilot, and test conceptually rich, inquiry-based materials for their classroom and then evaluate these materials through an action research project. JCE has been instrumental in helping TI teachers further develop as scholars and disseminate TI products by providing a venue for the publication of their inquiry materials. Furthermore, the pre-college editors have facilitated this by supporting teacher authors throughout the publishing process. This talk will highlight some of the TI activities published in the Journal as well as discuss how publication of the teachers’ work has contributed to their own professional development.
