P787: Development of a first semester hybrid organic chemistry course and assessment of students' learning

Julie Ealy (Pennsylvania State University – Lehigh Valley, USA)

Students met face-to-face for one class each week with the lectures accessible online. The students took quizzes online following almost every lecture. They also had three in-class tests and a final exam. A description of the course development will be presented. The four main areas of organic chemistry that caused students difficulty (nomenclature, molecular structure, reactions, and mechanisms) will be presented as well as general chemistry concepts that interfered with students’ understanding in organic chemistry. An F test showed a statistically significant relation between the time students spent taking online quizzes and their semester grade.
