P790: Chemistry, the automobile, and the periodic table of elements

Craig Donahue (University of Michigan – Dearborn, USA)

The 20th century’s greatest engineering achievements were recently identified by the National Academy of Engineering. In their estimation the automobile was the second most important achievement surpassed only by electrification. In another survey completed in 2007, the readership of JOM (Journal of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society) selected the fifty greatest moments in recorded history of material science and engineering. This list was topped by the creation of the periodic table of the elements by Dmitri Mendeleev. This presentation will identify elements and their compounds used in the construction and operation of the automobile. It is hoped that this exercise will convey the relevance of chemistry to engineering profession.
