P809: Inquiry exercises in the ChemConnections activity workbook

Sharon Anthony (Northland College, USA), Kevin Braun (Beloit College, USA), Heather Mernitz (Alverno College, USA)

How does a nuclear reactor work? How is nylon formed? What is in my blood? This session will introduce activities from the ChemConnections Activity Workbook that includes 59 classroom tested activities written in the context of societal and environmental issues. These activities assist students in learning general chemistry and simultaneously understanding how chemistry relates to issues such as acid rain, nuclear energy, nutrition, and technology. The activities were designed with attention to pedagogy and student learning styles and use a variety of activity styles including data analysis, laboratory, guided inquiry, and discovery.
