P83: Study of undergraduate chemistry students’ participation and impact on research experiences

A Chemistry Climate Study was conducted at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign to investigate graduate and undergraduate students’ attitudes and perceptions. One of the areas that was examined was undergraduate research participation, which included students who were participating and non-participating in research. Although 78.9% of undergraduate students who responded to the survey (N=164) would like to participate in research, only 25.5% were actively participating. Statistical analysis showed that undergraduate students who participated in research were more satisfied with their degree program, experience in the Chemistry Department, opportunities to do research in a lab, and research opportunities available than students who were not participating in research. Participating students also felt more confident that they would graduate from their degree program and reported a greater increase in their research/chemistry content knowledge, and abilities to design/conduct experiments and use techniques necessary for Chemistry practice than non-participating students.
