The traditional printed textbook is still the primary learning resource in most chemistry courses. We have been working an online visual text and have recently focused our attention on producing an online prep-Chem text that utilizes the same format. The visual nature of the materials in this format helps students create well-founded and correct visual mental models of the atomic world. In addition, we have incorporated unique animated sample problem solutions that model and simulate the problem solving process which include a just-in-time review of the basic math skills required to solve the problem. These materials may be used as a text in a traditionally structured course or as the principle vehicle for presenting the material in an online course. The design and production of these materials will be discussed and representative segments of the completed portions of the project will be showcased.
