P875: DeSales University 11th Annual Chem Demos: A new way of making science fun!

Sara Hayik (DeSales University, USA), Justin Krasnomowitz (DeSales University, USA), Peter Kaplan (DeSales University, USA)

Continuing in the tradition of the past 10 years of the DeSales Chemistry Demonstrations Program, 17 science majors have been involved in the presentation of a unique program geared towards high school and middle school aged children reaching approximately 1200 local students during the 2011-2012 academic year. This outreach program, which consists of a unique set of demonstrations annually, is offered to the neighboring school districts as an exciting addition and alternate perspective to their science courses and offers a unique program every year.  Sophmore, junior and senior students presenting the demonstrations are mentored by chemistry faculty members and come from a variety of the science and healthcare majors at the University.  This program provides a way for the DeSales students to explore new chemistry through demonstration development as well as improving presentation skills and gaining collaborative experience with other scientists.
