P883: Establishing a chemical hygiene officer/lab safety officer position at your school

Jonathan Rienstra-Kiracofe, Janelle Hadley (North Park University, USA)

Many university and colleges do not have well-defined Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) and/or Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO) positions.  North Park University recently hired a full time CHO/LSO.  Our work to create this position will be discussed in detail, including establishing the need for the position, researching and defining responsibilities and expectations, and working with the school administration to approve and fill the position.  Since the hiring of a CHO/LSO, we have seen a dramatic improvement in laboratory safety and chemical hygiene practices across our laboratory class curriculum, and North Park University is now in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.  Strategies and tips for creating or enhancing school CHO/LSO positions will be discussed.
