P891: Transitioning from verification to problem-based laboratories: Challenges, successes, and failures

Michelle Driessen (University of Minnesota, USA)

Verification labs are popular in large general chemistry programs for many reasons including the fact that they are more predictable in terms of outcomes and supplies needed, and are easier to run using teaching assistants.  While easier to manage, verification labs do not show students the process of doing science or allow them to learn important problem-solving skills.  Until recently, the University of Minnesota general chemistry program utilized verification laboratories exclusively.

During AY 2011-2012, the University of Minnesota general chemistry labs were completely converted to problem-based laboratories.  This talk will outline the transition, the challenges, areas of success, and items that need further improvement.
