P899: Experiential and group learning in an interdisciplinary non-majors science course

Most undergraduate non-science majors take a science course only to fulfill graduation requirements.  The most successful science courses designed for non-majors engage students at multiple levels.  An interdisciplinary framework that includes experiential exercises and group work helps to keep students from all majors interested in learning basic science concepts.  “Drugs: Curse or Cure” is a biochemistry-based non-majors course that attracts a diverse student population.  The mini-labs designed for the course help students learn the technical details and experimental procedures relevant to the development and analysis of drugs.  The drug project helps students understand how science dovetails with social, historical and political issues.
