P907: Chemistry labs at home

Geoff Rayner-Canham, Debbie Wheeler (Memorial University, Grenfell Campus, Canada)

In recent years, technological advances and the demand for learning at home have had a significant impact on course design and delivery in post-secondary education.  While these and other factors have led to the offering of many online social science, humanities, and non-lab science courses, the offering of lab-based science courses has remained a challenge.  We have developed an on-line introductory chemistry course, complete with a home-based lab component. The custom-developed laboratory component, using a supplied “lab-in-a-bin,” reinforces the course theory and provides students with experiential learning opportunities. In this presentation, we will review the process of designing and developing the course and the home-based labs and labkits.  We will also discuss the challenges we faced during the development and delivery of the course and how we overcame these challenges.  Finally, we will review the lessons learned from the first course offering.
