P931: Introducing the University of Illinois bonding module: building molecules

We are developing a new module for introductory chemistry courses that covers atoms, bonding, and molecules in a way that accurately reflects modern quantum chemical knowledge. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the section of the module that covers the nature of chemical bonding and the structure of molecules. Contrasts to older models such as Lewis structures and the VSEPR model will be made to show that our new approach provides a sounder foundation that is as intuitively accessible to students as the older models, if not more so. Building molecules atom-by-atom demonstrates the amount of variety that is possible while showing the common motifs that are adopted. The module is presented heuristically, with concepts discovered through investigation of possibilities.
