P949: LeaPS: A multiyear middle school professional development in the properties and structure of matter - WITHDRAWN

A Partnership among 3 state universities and 4 rural middle schools, involving 22 teachers and their students has built upon learning progressions in the physical sciences to generate inqiry-based units appropriate at each grade level. These schools had been shown to be at-risk based on standardized test scores in physical science concepts, particularly focusing on areas of the kinetic molecular model of matter.  We saw these schools as ideal platforms for implementation of a research-based professional development program. Pre-post testing of both teachers and their students show significant gains in content understanding. The structure of this program will be described and its impact on preparatory courses for pre-service teachers.
