P955: Restructuring the fundamental organic chemistry course curriculum for nonmajors

Katherine Masters (Pennsylvania State University, USA)

At Penn State, we offer a special two-cycle organic chemistry curriculum for nonmajors.  Traditionally, the first course’s curriculum followed the textbook’s order of topics and most of the chapters’ content.  Recently, a change was implemented to rearrange the order of topics and to restructure the course content in an attempt to allow for better digestion of the course material and for more time to master the basic concepts that are most aligned with the learning goals of the course.  The overall course layout will be discussed as well as student performance.
