S42b: Environmental Chemistry in the Classroom and Laboratory

Environmental chemistry subject matter is commonly included in introductory (general) and upper-level (analytical, organic, physical) chemistry courses since it is an extremely broad topic and can be used to address a wide range of chemistry content learning objectives. In addition, it is well-suited for incorporating authentic laboratory tasks through the testing of “real world” samples and the use of advanced data analysis techniques, such as geographic information systems (GIS) techniques. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, environmental chemistry is extremely relevant to students and presents an opportunity to connect chemical research with the interests of community stakeholders; for this reason environmental chemistry projects are often the focus of service learning projects. This symposium is an opportunity to discuss both classroom and laboratory activities that highlight the teaching and learning of environmental chemistry. Contributions describing environmental chemistry-specific courses are welcome, as are experiences in which environmental chemistry is included in the chemistry curriculum in novel ways.
