S65b: Quantitative Strategies in Chemistry Education Research

This symposium will present quantitative research strategies that can be applied in a chemical education research context. The symposium has two main foci: (1) methods for drawing inferences associated with a research question, assuming valid and reliable quantitative data and (2) methods associated with demonstrating that quantitative data (such as scores on an assessment) are valid and reliable for addressing a research question. Collectively, the presentations in this symposium should provide the audience with an overview of different quantitative strategies. Therefore, each presenter should address common questions a researcher using a specific strategy (or small set of strategies) might face when designing a study, collecting data, and interpreting data. Whether data come from a real research study or any convenient source, the presentations should focus more on the statistical methods and significance tests that are involved in data analysis rather than on the results obtained. A wide range of topics will be covered for general audience who are interested in the quantitative methods in chemical education.
