S70: Engaging Students in Chemistry using Forensics: Part I--for High School and Introductory College Programs

Organizer: Sheri Strickland (Converse College, USA)

Presider: Sheri Strickland (Converse College, USA)

The forensic application of many chemical methods and instrumental procedures often provides the perfect blend of technical training in the context of a story. The fictional use of forensics in TV shows such as NCIS, CSI: Miami, and Bones has captured the imagination of many college and high school students, motivating them to understand and master chemical concepts and skills. Whether they are training to make a difference as a forensics professional or are simply intrigued by the story at hand, students engage in a forensics scenario and are eager to learn whatever is required to solve the mystery. Past a point, motivation is everything! Educators of college and high school students are invited to share the forensics case studies and lab experiments they have used to engage their students in the amazing study of chemistry.
