Based on an instructional model that has been demonstrated to enhance transfer of learning in other content domains, we have designed and implemented inventing-with-contrasting cases (ICC) activities for general chemistry. During ICC activities, students work with data sets that highlight contrasting cases to invent formulas, procedures, and other general rules that describe the cases presented. Afterwards, students are presented with the accepted ideas in lecture. The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to engage in a first semester ICC activity and will present research analyses from implementations of these activities. All participants will be given an implementation workbook with sample ICC activities. This workshop is intended for instructors at the college level. To receive further information, please send an email request to Dawn Rickey; 3-hour session.
