Kristen Murphy, ACS Exams Institute, UW-Milwaukee
The workshop will utilize the content map that has been recently developed by the ACS Exams Institute. The map is organized in terms of “big ideas” that span the entire undergraduate curriculum. This workshop will use the general chemistry version of this map and look at how items included in an exam are aligned with this picture of the curriculum. Activities in the workshop will include: – familiarization with the big ideas content map; – introduction to the concept of cognitive complexity of test items; – working in groups and individually, participants will carry out alignment of items from ACS exams; – using previously aligned exam items, we will carry out analysis of content coverage from the perspective of the “big ideas” template; – participants will be invited to bring examples of their own exam items to carry out alignment so that they will be able to analyze their own assessment practices; two 3-hour sessions with different content – attend one or the other or both.
