W44: Teach Your Outreach Volunteers Effective Inquiry Facilitation Skills

Jen Sorensen, Seattle University
Stephanie Lingwood, Girl Scouts of Western Washington

Do you work with students or community volunteers who “do science” with kids? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to train volunteers to engage in high-quality scientific inquiry with youth in after-school settings. Drawing on best practices and tools developed by the NSF-funded Inquiry in the Community project, we’ll use hands-on activities to identify the specific behaviors and facilitation skills your volunteers need to foster inquiry. Then we’ll discuss how you can use these tools on your campus or in your community. Our curriculum builds volunteers’ confidence to nurture kids’ curiosity and investigative skills through youth-directed experiments; 3-hour session.

Intended Audience: Outreach

No fee; limit of 30 participants

Tuesday, July 31, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 210 FRG
