This workshop will provide college faculty with lab activities that combine the chemistry of artists’ materials with issues in conservation science. The workshop is modeled after a 5-day intensive workshop for college and university faculty (The Chemistry of Art) conducted under the auspices of the cCWCS(Chemistry Collaborations, Workshops and Communities of Scholars) grant project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The half-day workshop will consist of 4 or 5 lab activities facilitated by cCWCS workshop alumni and leaders. Activities may include: paper making and paper conservation; examination of paint and paintings; micro-chemical analysis of works of art and artifacts; metal corrosion and patinas; and fiber identification and deterioration. The lab activities are appropriate for use in general education science courses for non-science majors, as well as in general, organic and analytical chemistry courses for science majors. The c CWCS is supported by the NSF (TUES Type 3 Project #1022895); 3-hour session.
